How effective is our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Treatment?

Substance abuse intensive outpatient treatment programs (IOPs) are recommended for people with substance use disorders or co-occurring mental and substance use disorders who do not require medical detoxification or 24-hour supervision. IOPs are alternatives to expensive inpatient and residential treatment. They are designed to establish psychosocial supports and facilitate relapse management and coping strategies.

A recent study by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that based on the quality of trials, diversity of settings, and consistency of successful outcomes, the success rate for IOP was high. Multiple randomized analyses compared IOPs with inpatient or residential care; these types of services had comparable outcomes. Studies reported substantial reductions in alcohol and drug use between baseline and follow-up.

Conclusions

IOPs are an important part of the continuum of care for alcohol and drug use disorders. They are as effective as inpatient treatment for most individuals seeking care. Public and commercial health plans consider IOP treatment as a covered health benefit. Standardization of the elements included in IOPs (such as the Square One Clinics Long-term Success Program)  have improved their quality and effectiveness.

At Square One Clinics, our IOP treatment helps the individual learn early-stage relapse management and coping strategies, ensure that the client has psychosocial support, and address individual symptoms and needs.
